A major bulk of the work that happens in Samvidh centres around the remedial training provided to children with SLD. Children with different kinds of and different severities of SLD are assessed and provided remedial training. Two kinds of remedial training programmes are currently available. One is the After-school remedial programme which caters to children who are able to function within a regular school system but require additional support. The support is offered in the form of a neuropsychological remedial programme for an hour every day after school. The second programme is the more intensive remedial training programme where children who find it difficult to make progress in a regular school environment are offered the National Open University (NIOS) system of education combined with a neuropsychological remedial programme.
A special set of activities developed by the director of the organization is being implemented at the centre. The programme is based on sound theoretical understanding of the disorder. The uniqueness of the programme lies in the fact that it combines two methods- an internationally tried and tested method with another indigenous method developed on the Indian population. The combination of the two programmes has been successfully used with different populations with specific learning disorders and other developmental disorders. Several children have become independent learners and have gone to complete school and even participate in competitive exams and come out with flying colours. The programme is an intensive, short and focused programme that is shaped based on each child's assessment profile. Deficit areas from the assessment are identified and targeted. Improvements on tasks are known to bring about improvements in underlying cognitions and subsequently the child displays overall improvement in all areas of functioning such as academics, social interaction and behaviour.
